How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT
ChatGPT recommends the local businesses that the web describes most clearly and most consistently: what they do, where they are, and what customers say about them. To be named, make your website state your trade and town plainly, keep your listings identical everywhere, earn a steady stream of reviews, and get mentioned on the local pages it reads.
Why this matters now
45% of consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools to get local business recommendations, according to BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey — AI is now the third most popular place people go for one.
And the answer is short. In BrightLocal's study of AI local search, ChatGPT named 4.1 businesses per answer on average. There is no page two. You are one of the four, or you are not in the conversation.
How ChatGPT decides who to name
When someone asks for "the best plumber in Austin", ChatGPT searches the web and builds its answer from what it finds: your website, your listings on directories and review sites, local "best of" articles, news, and forums. Businesses that many sources describe the same way are easy to recommend with confidence. Businesses with thin or contradictory information are easy to leave out.
Ranking well on Google does not carry over automatically. In BrightLocal's study, Google Maps showed a tracked business in 66% of searches; ChatGPT named it in 33%.
Seven things that get you named
- Say what you do and where, in plain words. Put your trade and your town in your homepage title, your main heading and your first sentence. "Emergency plumber in North Austin" is something an AI can quote; "Quality you can trust" is not.
- Make your listings identical everywhere. Same business name, address and phone number on Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and the directories in your trade. AI assistants read more than Google.
- Earn reviews steadily, not in bursts. Recent reviews matter, and so does what they say: a review that mentions the service and the neighbourhood gives an assistant something specific to repeat.
- Get onto the pages assistants cite. Local "best of" roundups, local news, trade associations and chambers of commerce. One mention on a page an assistant already trusts is worth more than another post on your own blog.
- Answer customers' real questions on your site. Prices or price ranges, hours, areas you serve, insurance you take, how fast you can come. Those are the follow-up questions people ask the assistant.
- Add structured data. LocalBusiness markup (schema.org) states your name, address, hours and services in a form machines read without guessing.
- Measure it properly. Ask the questions your customers ask, more than once, and track whether you are named over time — see how to check if ChatGPT recommends your business.
How long it takes
Fixing your own website and listings is days of work. New reviews and new mentions take weeks to months to show up in answers, because assistants only see them once the pages are found and read. Anyone who guarantees you a ChatGPT recommendation by a date is guessing.

Questions people ask
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT's local recommendations are not adverts. They are built from what the web says about businesses, so the way in is to make that information clear, consistent and well reviewed.
Does my Google ranking help me get recommended by ChatGPT?
It helps, but it is not enough on its own. In BrightLocal's study, Google Maps showed a tracked business in 66% of searches while ChatGPT named it in 33%.
How many businesses does ChatGPT recommend?
Usually about four. BrightLocal measured an average of 4.1 businesses per ChatGPT answer, with a median of four.
