What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)? A Guide for Local Businesses
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your business named and cited in answers written by AI — ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity and similar tools. SEO aims for a high position in a list of links; GEO aims to be one of the few names the AI actually gives.
GEO, AEO and AI SEO: the same idea, three names
- GEO — generative engine optimization: being included in answers that AI generates.
- AEO — answer engine optimization: being the answer a search engine or assistant gives directly, including featured snippets and voice answers.
- AI SEO — the umbrella term most people search for.
The labels overlap so much that the distinction rarely matters to a business owner. What matters is the change underneath them.
How GEO differs from SEO
- A list versus a shortlist. Google shows pages of results; ChatGPT names about four businesses (BrightLocal).
- Position versus presence. In SEO you ask "where do I rank?" In GEO the first question is "am I named at all?"
- Your site versus the whole web. AI answers lean heavily on what other sources say about you — reviews, directories, articles — not only on your own pages.
- Stable versus moving. Ask ChatGPT the same question twice and only about 23% of the businesses repeat, in BrightLocal's measurements. One check tells you very little.
Is SEO dead, then?
No. A clear, fast, well-structured website and a complete Google Business Profile are still the foundation — AI tools read the same web. But ranking on Google no longer guarantees you are recommended by AI, so it is no longer the whole job. See AI search vs SEO for the side-by-side.
What GEO looks like for a local business
- Your trade and town stated plainly on your site.
- Identical name, address and phone across every listing.
- A steady flow of detailed, recent reviews.
- Mentions on local roundups, news and association pages.
- Structured data (LocalBusiness schema) on your site.
- Regular checks of what AI actually says about you.

How to measure GEO
Rank trackers measure positions on Google, which is the wrong number for AI answers. GEO is measured by asking the assistants the questions customers ask, repeatedly, and counting how often you are named. That is what Vouchly AI does: 16 customer questions on ChatGPT and Google, a score, the competitors named instead, and the fixes in order.
Questions people ask
What does GEO stand for?
Generative engine optimization: improving how often a business or brand is named and cited in answers generated by AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
Very little in practice. AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being the direct answer a search engine or assistant gives; GEO is about being included in AI-generated answers. Both aim at the same outcome: being named when someone asks.
Do small local businesses need GEO?
Increasingly, yes. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 45% of consumers use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations.
